The largest freshman class Troy University has seen in three years has been preparing for their first semester at Troy University with IMPACT, the two-day orientation that introduces them to all things Trojan.
Between June 12 and July 21, 1,550 freshman and transfer students will have taken part in IMPACT, attending student organization browse sessions, learning about academic policies and departments, and even enjoying a night at Butter and Egg Adventures.
Destyni Peoples , Troy University’s Coordinator of Student Involvement and Leadership, coordinated the browse sessions which connected current students from more than 80 clubs with new students and their parents.
“Think of student involvement as your personal life when it comes to being a student,” Peoples said. “We also want you to be able to find a good, secure group of people to be around.
“Mental health is so important, so having a good source of family and community around you while you’re away from a place that is not familiar to you can create that stability when it comes to college.”
Grice Davis, a junior music industry major from Midland City, Alabama, was at the browse session representing Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a special interest fraternity revolving around music. Davis said he did not attend IMPACT as a freshman, but volunteering for the browse session made him realize what he missed out on.
“I just kind of went into my first semester blind and I regret it,” Davis said. “It is so good for these students to already be looking at all these opportunities to be involved because it’s a very small town.
“The best way to not feel bored in Troy is to be involved with something, especially if it’s something you can go to and call home.”
Incoming freshman Ainsleigh Sternberg, a computer science major from Prattville, Alabama, said she had an amazing time attending IMPACT.
“I made friends at IMPACT and even got to meet my soon-to-be neighbors there,” Sternburg said. “I liked meeting all the different clubs I could be in, and I have more ideas on how to do something fun at Troy other than just going to class and studying.”
